Hi - I don't comment on many blogs but had to on yours. It's very well-done! I really like how you write - very to the point, unlike a lot of other journals. The job market now is so competitive, you have to have a perfect resume. There is a very affordable consulting service a friend of mine used. It is at http://www.www.ResumeQA.com.com/Review_My_Resume.html. Please check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks for having this site. I'll bookmark it and visit regularly. Keep up the great work!

The odd thing is that I'm a member of their loyalty program (which you have to pay for). How much more dedicated could you get to a company?

I’m a long-time Road Runner Sports customer, too. A simpler solution might be to offer you the ability to sign up for a shipment of new shoes every six months (or whatever other frequency you desire).

I can think of other examples of companies that don’t use their own data well. I’ve had an American Express card for 20 years. In that time I’ve travelled to Europe once each year, religiously, and used my card to pay and their offices or ATMs to exchange currency. I’ve occasionally wondered why I haven’t ever received an offer from Amex based on that travel. Worse is when I attempt to use my card for a cash advance in Europe, only to find that Amex won’t let me because it doesn’t fit my “usage patterns.” How can an annual event not fit a pattern?

My guess is they have the analytics capabilities and the firepower but that these resources lack direction. Companies aren’t doing the research up-front that allows them to really understand the needs of their customers. We are, unfortunately, still a long way from realizing the promise of one-to-one marketing.

Have you registered via their loyalty program online?

The only way for Roadrunner to target you is one of two ways:
1. e-CRM/CRM (requires your name + address and permission)
2. Outside List Procurement (they won't know that you purchased, just that you might fit a "buyer" profile)

You're right though, they're definitely missing an opportunity by not finding a way to communicate with you. On their website, the "Register" area is sort of lost in the discount tabs. If you take a look at "Net Promoter Score", GE has actually tried to quantify the value of repeat customers...an amazing metric that helps marketers quantify the value of repeat business and WOM (word-of-mouth).

Hi, Ellen. I just wanted to thank you for the blog entry you wrong on age discrimination. It's nice to hear some honesty together with a genuine empathy with people in our position. Some people wouldn't bother.

I'm in the midst of getting my CPA license at 55. I think I'll just hang out a shingle and compete with the locals if I can't join them. I have a lot of relevant experience. And, as it happens, I still have a functioning brain and an excellent work ethic, and realistically speaking, I may not have a choice when the time comes. All I really have to do is make life easier for my clients, and I already know how to do that from all my work experience!

Cheers,
Mary

Age discrimination shows itself even in Government employment. For example, if you try to become an educator at 50 or 60, they will hire 20 year olds instead. Hiring someone older can save the educational system a lot of money since they probably won't have 30 years in any system to collect the generous retirement benefits. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no way to prove age discrimination in these cases. It's every discouraging.

Unless it's a joke or an article that's been sent to me by email, I usually ask the sender if it's ok to forward it.
